Bad taste in fashion? Oh! Not PC enough for you? Happy New Year!
Change starts on the 20th ...
This is what you call a "no news" day... Except,
Manufacturing activity around the world fell sharply in December, suggesting that the U.S. recession will extend well into 2009, if not longer, and that unemployment will rise globally.
A broad index of change in U.S. manufacturing activity fell to its lowest level since June 1980, when the economy was on the verge of a severe double-dip recession, according to the Institute for Supply Management. Not one of the 18 industries surveyed reported growth, and some, such as wood products, have been in decline for more than two years.
New orders, a gauge of future activity, sank to the lowest index ...
President Bush has blamed the violence in Gaza and southern Israel firmly on Hamas, after a week of Israeli air strikes and Palestinian rocket attacks.
Mr Bush, who has just weeks left in office, said Hamas was a terrorist group dedicated to destroying Israel.
Earlier the Hamas leader-in-exile, Khaled Meshaal, warned Israel of a "black destiny" if it began a threatened ground offensive on Gaza.
Hamas said one of its military leaders died in an overnight strike.
More than 400 people have died in the Israeli bombardment since it began last Saturday. The UN says at least 100 of them were civilians.
Four Israelis have been killed by rockets fired into Israel from Gaza, which have hit towns up to 25 miles (40km) from the narrow coastal strip.
Both sides have ignored international calls for a ceasefire.
Israel says its air campaign, launched in a bid to prevent militant rocket attacks from Hamas-controlled Gaza, has been going according to plan.
Russian Gazprom cut off gas supplies to Ukraine on Jan. 1, and the impact has been felt in some European Union members like Hungary and Romania.
Talks between the two sides broke off on Dec. 31, and Ukraine's Naftogaz called on Gazprom on Saturday to return to the frozen negotiating table.
"There is no confrontation here, there is no antagonism here," Burris said in a phone interview from Chicago. "And so we are proceeding very diplomatically, and we are proceeding with all concern about not creating any type of circus that will entertain the media."
The new Senate will be sworn in Tuesday. Senate Democrats don't want to give Burris the oath of office because he was appointed by Gov. Blagojevich, who is facing federal public corruption charges for trying to sell the Obama seat in a variety of schemes.
The Senate faces a chaotic week, with the Minnesota Senate race recount now favoring Democrat Al Franken, the comic, over the GOP incumbent, Sen. Norm Coleman; the mess over the Obama seat, and Caroline Kennedy in play to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's pick for secretary of state.
