Move news from Kiwi State

LOVE IS BLIND: Doris and Tekau-Fota disregard their differences as the dove and the dog embark on an improbable love match.

It is a blind date with a difference.

Doris the dove and Tekau-Fota the alsatian-labrador cross make unlikely companions but owner Gordon Blair says the pair have been inseparable for nearly two months. Tekau-Fota is 11 and starred in a Qantas advertisement as a young pup. He has cancer which has led to recent blindness. As the canine learns to feel his way his feathered friend stays right beside him. Mr Blair guides Tekau-Fota around his Dairy Flat property to help the dog to avoid crashing into things, and Doris is never far away as she flies to various points along the route. "The sound of her guides him to where he is going," Mr Blair says.
The doting dove has also been known to join her love interest for dinner dates, for a frolic in the hay and has ventured into the kennel to doze next to the dog. But it wasn’t love at first sight. The two animals have lived with the Blairs for six years and it wasn’t until Tekau-Fota lost sight in one eye six weeks ago that Mr Blair noticed Doris’ infatuation.
