Nurse Ann Samford obituary



Funeral services for Mrs. Ann Samford, age 96 of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Thomasson and Pastor Leah Hanks officiating. Entombment will follow at Restland Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family received friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Samford passed away on Sunday morning, March 22, 2009 in Carthage.

Annie Zelia Trichel Samford was born on January 27, 1913 in Clear Lake, Louisiana, the eighth of nine children born to the marriage of Lucien F. Trichel, Sr. and Victoria Bryant. She graduated from Goldonna High School in Goldonna, Louisiana. Mrs. Samford received her Registered Nurse training at the old Charity Hospital in Shreveport, completing her work in 1939.

She was part of a group of nurses that was sent to the New London explosion in March of 1937, where over 300 students and teachers were killed.

She began her nursing career at the old Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital in 1939. She met her future husband A. Morris Samford, Sr. in February of 1940, while he was a patient at the hospital. They married on June 6, 1940 in Groveton, Texas and in 2008, they celebrated over 68 years of marriage.

Also during her career, she worked as a school nurse in the Shelby County, Gary, and Fairplay schools and as a nurse at Panola General Hospital. After leaving the hospital, she worked as an office nurse for Dr. Virgil Holland until her retirement in 1975.

She moved to Carthage in 1951 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was also a member of the Gleaner’s Sunday School Class. Mrs. Samford was a member of the Altrusa Club and was a Rotary-Ann. She was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers and sisters; her son, Archie Morris Samford, Jr. on November 30, 2008; and her son-in-law, John P. Cole.

Mrs. Samford is survived by her husband, Archie Morris Samford, Sr. of Carthage; one daughter, Barbara Ann Cole of Carthage; three grandchildren, John Michael Cole of Austin, Catherine Ann Cole of Spring, and Archie M. Samford III of Carthage. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends also survive Mrs. Samford.

Serving as pallbearers are Kabot Baker, Phil Grimes, Steve Grimes, Pat Browning, Olin Joffrion, Terry Bailey, and Robert Underwood.
