UPDATE: Legislative Update on Animal Rights Bills

We wanted to take this opportunity to again thank everybody for all their help in connection with our legislative agenda so far this session. Your response has been great and very helpful. This is a bill update to let you know how we have done so far with our major legislative initiatives.

HB 1320 (our cockfighting bill) has passed the House and is now in the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice. Our Senate sponsor is Senator Rodney Ellis. We hope to have a Committee hearing on this bill soon.

HB 3180 (our puppy mill bill) has passed the House and is now going to the Senate. The House version was amended with two amendments that weakened the bill. We will work to correct those in the Senate and will be contacting you with action alerts for Senate action as needed.

HB 1046 (which would have allowed appeals in civil seizure cases) is dead. This is a huge victory for the animals.

HB 1472 (which allows a person to kill a dog if the dog is "harassing" his animals) passed the House despite our efforts to defeat it. We will continue to try to defeat this bill in the Senate and will no doubt be asking for your help in that regard.

Again, thanks to all of you who contacted your representatives on our bills so far and please be on the lookout for future action alerts.
