Such a nuclear pulse detonation engine would explain that sequence in Close Encounters of the Third Kind with the truck at the Railroad Crossing...

The electromagnetic pulse of the "controlled" nuclear explosions in the engine of the TR-3B would have stopped the truck, burned out the electronics, and lifted the truck and the RR crossing sign up into the air... and then dropped it. The EP would have caused the light flash and the radiation sun burn on Richard Dreyfuss... However, that was a movie.
