Zoo puts pudgy pachyderm on diet: "EDMONTON — Lucy the elephant is aiming to be Edmonton's biggest loser. The Valley Zoo's 34-year-old Asian elephant is cutting carbs and increasing her exercise routine in an effort to shed 1,000 pounds (453 kilograms) over the next year, veterinarian Dr. Milton Ness says. Under a new treatment plan announced Friday, Ness said Lucy's handlers will also investigate ways to improve her indoor environment so she can get more exercise when the weather gets cold. The goal of the healthier lifestyle is to improve the elephant's breathing problems and help control her arthritis, Ness said."
